学院概况
中央美术学院的前身是国立北平艺术专科学校和华大三部美术系。北平艺术专科学校的历史可以上溯到19l8年由著名教育家蔡元培积极倡导下成立的国立北京美术学校,这是中国历史上第一所国立美术教育学府,也是中国现代美术教育的开端,华北大学美术系的前身是1938年创建于延安的“鲁艺”美术系。
1950年4月,在北平艺专和华大三部美术系合并的基础上,成立了中央美术学院。毛泽东主席题写了院名,徐悲鸿、江丰、吴作人、古元、靳尚谊先后担任院长。
按照党的教育方针和文艺方向,中央美术学院在探索有中国特色的社会主义美术教育中不懈努力,
把新型的革命美术思想与外来美术教育经验结合起来,把深入生活的创作实践和严谨扎实的基础训练结合起来,形成了高质量、高水平的教学传统和良好的学术风范。为国家培养了大量美术专业人才,他们中的许多人成为我国美术教育和创作的骨干力量。
中央美术学院名师荟萃,同时是我国美术创作和研究的一个重 要中心。在20世纪各个历史时期,学院教师的创作和研究成果以优秀的学术质量产生了广泛的社会影响。
改革开放以来,中央美术学院积极进行教学改革、学术建设和教学管理体制改革,任保持原有优势
的基上,增加了适应国家现代化发展需求的新学科,积极开展了国际合作办学等对外交流活动,形成了多种专业齐头并进的教学格局。学院现有本科专业四个(绘画、雕塑、艺术设计、美术学)、硕士专业两个(美术学、设计艺术学)、博士专业一个(美术学);设有中国画、油画、版画、壁画、雕塑、设计、美术史7个系和造型艺术专业基础教部,并设有成人教育部、附属中等美术学校;全院每年招收中专生(附中)、专科生(成人教育)、本科生、硕士研究生、博士研究生和各类进修生,形成了多层次、多类型的完整、系统的美术教育体系。
学院教学实行学年学分制管理,本科学制为4年,(雕塑及环境艺术设计专业为5年),研究生学制
3年。本科生教学实行1年试读制,新生入学经过1年试读,考核合格方取得正式学籍。本科课程分为专业必修课、专业选修课、公共必修课、公共选修课4类。必修课与选修课的比例是7:3,专业课与公共课的比例同样也为7:3。4年制学分总量为133一138学分(5年制另加32学分),平均每学期修16-20学分。2年级以上学生每学期都有3周的时间可以跨系选修其它专业的课程。
中央美术院现有教授、副教授88名,讲师53名,在校本科生和研究生近千人。现任院长是著名国画家、美术史论家潘公凯教授,现任院学术委员会主任是著名油画家、全国政协常委、中国文联副主席、中国美术家协会主席靳尚谊教授,党委书记是扬力同志。
随着国家高等教育管理体制的改革,中央美术学院由原主管部委国家文化部划转为国家教育部管理,成为教育部直属唯一一所高等美术院校。2001年9月,作为国家“九五”期间重点文化事业建设项目的中央美术学院及附中新址落成。校园占地200亩,首期建筑面积,7.6万平方米,校园规模和办学条件在国际上堪称一流,为中央美术学院在新世纪的全面发展奠定了坚实的基础。

Introduction
to the Central Academy
of Fine Arts
The
predecessors of the Centrai Academy of Fine Arts were
the National Beiping Art School and the Fine Arts
epartment of Huabei University. The history of the
National Beiping Art School may date back to the National
Beijing Art School founded in 1918 under the initiative
of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, a famous educator, which was the
first nationai art education institution in China's
history and the beginning of modern art education
in China. The predecessor of Huabei University was
the Fine Arts Department of the ''Luxun Literature
and Art University'' founded in Yan'an in 1938.
 In
April 1950, the Centrai Academy of Fine Arts came
into being incorporating the National Beiping Art
School and the Fine Arts Department of Huabei University.
Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the name of the academy.
Xu Beihong, Jiang Feng, Wu Zuoren, Cu Yuan and Jin
Shangyi were presidents of CAFA successiveiy.
In
line with the educational guidelines and art and literature
orientation of the Party, CAFA seeks to expiore an
art education with Chinese Characters, combines the
tradition of the new revolutionarY art with foreign
art education experiences and combines the creation
practice into life with a soild foundation training.
A high quality, high ievei educational tradition and
a fine academic style have taken shape and a great
number of art professionais have been trained in the
academy, who have become the backbone force in art
education and creation in China. in the meantime,
being an institution with many masters, CAFA is one
of the most important centers of China in art creation
and research. In different historicai periods of the
20th century, the creation and research achievements
of the teachers of the academy, with excellent academic
quality, have produced wide social impact.
Since
China's openingup and reform process began, CAFA has
actively conducted the teaching reform and the reforms
on academic construction and teaching management system.
On the basis of the originai advantages, new subjects
that meet the requirements of the modernization of
the China have been added, international exchanges
such as international cooperative teaching have been
activeiy pursued, and a teaching pattern of many specialties
developing together has been formed. Currently there
are undergraduate specialties (painting, sculpture,
art design and art study), two graduate specialties
(art study, design art study) and one doctorate specialty
(art study) in CAFA with seven departments, namely,
the Chinese Painting Department, the Oil Painting
Department, the Printmaking Department, the Mural
Painting Department, the Design Department and the
Art History Department,as well as the Department of
Plastic Arts Foundation Study, the Adult Education
Division and the Affiliated High School of Fine Arts.
CAFA has formed a multilayer, multitype and complete
art education system with the enrollment covering
special secondary school students, three-year college
students (adult education), undergraduate students,graduate
students, doctorate students and students for advanced
studies.
 CAFA
undertakes academic year and credit management. The
length of schooling for under graduate students is
4 years (5 years for sculpture and environment art
design), the length of schooling of graduate students
is 3years. The undergraduate students must undergo
a oneyear trial period, and can only obtain the formal
student status after passing an examination. The curriculum
is cateqorized into speciaity compulsories, speciaity
eiectives, common compuisories and common electives
(public courses refer to courses on sociai sciences
and foreign languages and physical culture). The portion
between compulsories and elective is 73, and the portion
between specialty courses and common courses is aiso
73. The totai required credits in 4 years range from
133-138 (another 32 credits for 5 year students),
an average of 1620 credits a semester. Students over
qrade two will have 3 weeks a semester in which they
can select courses of other specialties across the
departments.
Currently
CAFA has 88 professors and associate professors, 53
Iecturers and neariy one thousand undergraduate and
graduate students. The current President is Professor
Pan Conqkai, a famous Chinese painting artist and
art historian. The current Director of the Academic
Committee of CAFA is ProfessorJin Shangyi, a famous
oilpainter, who is also a member of the Standinq Committee
of NPPCC the Vice Chairman of China Confederation
of Art and Literature, and the Chairman of China Artists'Association.
The Secretary of CPC CAFA Committee is Comrade Yang
Li.
CAFA
is the oniy art institution of higher learning directly
under the Ministry of Education. In September 200
1, the new campus of CAFA and its affiliated high
school, with a land of 200 mu and a building area
of 76,000 square mZ in the first stage, was put into
operation, providing CAFA with a firstrate infrastructure
in international art institutions, and laying a Firm
basis for the allround development of CAFA in the
new century.
